Student Employment

Balanced School and Work Life

ACES is a great place to work. We are dedicated to providing exceptional services to our student customers and the Alfred State College community.

Any Alfred State College student is eligible for employment with ACES. Aside from availability, students are hired on a first-come, first-serve basis.

How to Apply

Stop in and pick up an application at any of the following locations; The Terrace, Friendly's Café/Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Exit West Café, and the Campus Store, or simply download an application and bring the application to the unit where you want to work. You also need to bring your class schedule so that the unit manager can develop a work schedule that does not interfere with your studies. Applications are only accepted when students are on campus.

Your earnings as a student employee are subject to all federal and state taxes so you must complete federal and New York State tax withholding forms (IT-2104 or an IT-2104-E) in order to be paid. In addition, to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, ACES must verify, document, and maintain a record of your eligibility to work in this country. As a result, you are required to complete an I-9 form and present certain documents that will satisfy these requirements no later than three days after you are hired. Your driver license, social security card, and birth certificate may be required for proof.

Hours and Benefits

ACES maintains that your most important role at Alfred State is that of a student. With that in mind, we offer flexible shifts to accommodate various class schedules. The average student works 8 to 12 hours per week. You may be scheduled up to, but no more than, 20 hours a week. You may work in more than one location but the maximum hours per week is the same.

International Student Workers

According to the ASC Office for International Students, international students can work 20 hours per week when classes are in session. By immigration regulations, international students may not work off-campus. International students must go to the International Education Office to have their I-20 endorsed for on-campus employment and must apply for a social security card before they start working.

Pay Checks

Student workers are paid bi-weekly by check or by direct deposit to a checking or savings account. The beginning wage rate is the New York State Minimum Wage rate. Paychecks are distributed every other Friday and cover hours from the corresponding pay period. You must pick up your own paycheck unless prior arrangements have been made, in writing, with your manager.
