The Cultural Life Center Mission
The Cultural Life Center (CLC) strives to provide an open-minded, welcoming, and safe environment for the Alfred State College campus and community. Through educational workshops/programs, professional training, advocacy, and outreach, the CLC facilitates students’ self-awareness, learning, and growth of different cultures, viewpoints, and experiences. The center supports individuals in matters of academic, social, cultural, and personal well-being, and promotes understanding and appreciation of differences, as well as similarities. The CLC does this work through a cultural humble lens and subscribes to the three central tenets of this scholarly concept/framework.
These tenets are:
- Dedication to life-long learning and critical self-reflection.
- A commitment to addressing unethical systemic power imbalances present between institutions and people effected.
- A commitment to institutional/holistic accountability
Cultural Life Assembly
Cultural Life Assembly is an advisory council comprised of the heads of each cultural and identity-based club on Alfred State campus. The assembly serves as a governing body for these groups, provides feedback and advice to the Cultural Life Center, and develops collective programming to bring students together across all identity groups.
Nondiscrimination Policy
Diversity can be broadly defined to include all aspects of human difference, including but not limited to, age, disability, race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression and identity, language heritage, learning style, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, status as a veteran and world-view. Alfred State College does not discriminate on the basis of any of the above-listed factors. Alfred State College is a member of the State University of New York, who focuses in particular on achieving equal access, meaningful academic and intellectual inclusion in curriculum, research and service, and holistic integration into the academic culture of higher education at all levels for New York State’s underrepresented populations and students who are economically disadvantaged. As a campus we recognize that our diversity makes us stronger, and strive to promote an inclusive environment for members of the Alfred State College community.
