Returning
students and faculty as well as visitors arriving on the Alfred State College
(ASC) campus noticed a change in the "landscape" this fall. Thanks to the college's recent "building
boom," a townhouse-style residential facility greets visitors arriving from the
main entrance looking for all the world like the upscale living complex it
is. The complex boasts six residential
buildings and a community center. Each
brick residential unit offers four or five apartments, each equipped with a
full kitchen, a furnished living room, two-and-a-half baths, and six private
furnished bedrooms. The commons building
for the complex offers a centralized laundry area and meeting facilities. Townspeople were invited to tour the facility
on Aug. 21.

Another new opening this fall is
the Gathering Place.
This structure is a two-story addition that joins the Central Dining Hall and
the Allied Health Building. The Gathering
Place features a new food court on the first floor
with Taco Bell, Freshens, and Friendly's Café.
There is also an open area on the first floor where performances may be
held. The second floor offers a spot
that can be used for socializing or meeting in small groups to work on projects
as well as a dining room.

In addition to the living and dining
areas, the athletics area is undergoing major additions. A $3.3 million project
is under way. This fall ASC will utilize the playing field and track, first of
the athletic additions. The final games of the soccer season will be played on
the new field. The athletic additions will provide Alfred State
with a state-of-the-art outdoor playing area in addition to the wonderful
indoor athletic facilities already on campus.

Other, smaller projects have also
taken place during the summer including window replacement and restroom
rehabilitation in Main Gate residence halls; air conditioning and updated commuter lounge in EJ Brown (class room building);
and door replacement at Peet and Braddon residence halls.
Other infrastructure upgrades in generators, heat exchangers, sprinkler
installations, sidewalk and concrete stair replacement, and campus
beautification have also been undertaken.

Faculty hit campus on Aug. 20 to
gather for Officer in Charge Dr. Ronald R. Rosati's opening remarks. Rosati kicked off the academic year by updating
new and returning faculty on the state of the college as well as spotlighting
the College's Centennial celebration year.

Incoming freshmen arrived on Aug. 21,
where those who had been unable to attend a summer orientation session "caught
up" with their college indoctrination, finalized their class schedules, and
participated in the 14^th annual New Student Convocation where they
were officially welcomed by college dignitaries and dedicated themselves to the
principles of community endorsed by the college.

Incoming and returning students, who arrived on
campus at the end of the week, also attended a full slate of activities
including an Activities Fair which introduced students to the variety of
organizations and activities available to them, which was followed by an
Activities Carnival, where students played games of skill and chance-at booths
staffed by faculty and other members of the college community-for play money
which they turned in for prizes at the end of the evening.

Classes for academic year 2007-08 at Alfred State
College begin Monday, Aug. 27.

Plans continue for the centennial
anniversary celebration of Alfred State College, 2007-08. Activities for this event were previewed
during Bake-at-the-Lake, Reunion 2007, and continue through homecoming 2008. Recent activities included participation in
the Wellsville Balloon Rally parade in July and the Wellsville Sesquicentennial
parade in August, a display and reception at Steuben Trust Bank in Hornell; and
a display in the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce window. Additional planned events
include the return of the Taste of Wellsville on the School of Applied
Technology campus, Saturday, Oct. 6.

Other important dates include: two Admissions Open House programs this fall-
one on Sunday, Oct.21, and the second one on Saturday, Nov. 10. The Alfred
campus and the School of Applied Technology campus, located in Wellsville, will be
open on these days. Representatives at both campuses will be available to
provide tours and answer questions. Registration may be done online or when the
student arrives on campus starting at 9
a.m. (more details can be found on ASC's newly re-designed ASC Web

Families will have an opportunity
to visit campus during Family Weekend, Oct. 6-8, which will feature a full
schedule of activities geared for students and their guests, including the
Children's Festival to be held Saturday, Oct. 6; the School of Applied
Technology campus will reprise a "Taste of
Wellsville" where local eateries will showcase their signature dishes from 11
a.m. until 2 p.m.

Presentation of the Distinguished
Alumni Award will take place during the official Centennial kick-off on
Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Lake Lodge where current and former ASC faculty,
staff, and alumni will honor Douglas J. Barber,'66, professor emeritus, Civil
Engineering Technology, and officially kick-off the yearlong centennial
celebration with a book signing by the various authors of the newly written
history book which picks up where Elaine Hritz's The First 60 Years left off.

"Foodies" will
want to mark their calendars as the Culinary Arts Department on the Wellsville
Applied Technology campus announces its scheduled events: Tuesday, Sept. 11, Fine Dining Lab begins; Saturday,
Oct. 6, culinary students will provide demonstrations and specialty food items and
bakery students will host their annual bake sale fundraiser during the "Taste
of Wellsville;" Thursday, Oct. 18, culinary students will host a spaghetti dinner;
and on Wednesday, Oct. 31, they will host a Halloween Luncheon Buffet (please
note the change!); Thursday, Nov. 29, will be the final evening of the Fine
Dining Lab for the semester. On
Wednesday, Dec. 5, culinary students will host their annual Holiday Buffet. Spring semester activities
include: Tuesday, Jan. 22, Fine Dining
Lab re-opens; Tuesday, Feb. 5, culinary students will host their annual Mardi
Gras Dinner; Saturday, March 29, Post Secondary Skills competitions will
be held throughout the Wellsville campus; and Saturday, April 26, the students enrolled
in both culinary programs will compete in the annual Culinary Exposition.

Students will head off-campus for a
break following their last class on Friday, Oct. 12, and return when classes resume on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Thanksgiving break is scheduled to begin
Wednesday, Nov. 21; classes resume Monday, Nov. 26.
