Members of Alfred State’s archery club took their shot at some early practice by competing at Swain Resort’s archery festival.  Now in its seventh year, the festival hosts activities for archers of all types.  Accessing the mountain by the resort’s chairlifts, the archers selected one of four thirty-target “3D” courses where they made their best shots on foam targets at unknown distances in varying wooded terrain. Interim archery club president Mason Mohney, an electrical construction and maintenance electrician freshman, says the trip is an example of things to come for the growing organization.

“The ability to actively participate in archery as part of my college experience is one of the reasons I’m excited to be at Alfred State,” stated Mohney. “Our club is expanding to take advantage of our new indoor range and will work to also form a competitive travel team by the end of the semester.”

The woodsmen’s club recently concluded a winning season, taking first place at the 70th Annual Northeast Woodsmen’s Conclave, which Alfred State hosted this year. The ski and snowboard club is gearing up for an active winter season ahead while the outdoor recreation club enjoys nature as a year-round activity.

“This fall we have mountain biking, white water rafting, paintball, high ropes courses, horseback riding, and kayak lessons,” stated Kathy Bayus outdoor recreation club co-advisor. “And that’s just within the first couple of months. The area around Alfred is ripe with some awesome opportunities that we want students to enjoy.”

Outdoor-related clubs take students at every level of experience and members work together to build their skills. During this season, clubs are holding organizational meetings to enlist new members and seeking students who want to accept roles of responsibility where leadership skills can also be a product of joining the club.
