Architecture Studies in Italy (Alfred State Students Only)

Italy architectureThe Architecture Studio Sorrento program is open only to Alfred State architecture students in their junior year of study and provides participants a unique opportunity for a spring semester study that splits the classroom experience between Alfred State and Sorrento, Italy over two equal parts of term. Students take courses in Italian language (delivered by Sant'Anna Institute) with credit granted through Alfred State. Students have the opportunity to earn Alfred State credit in an architectural design studio, which focuses on historic preservation, taught by Alfred State faculty. Studio projects involve field measurement and notations, analysis of traditional building methods, digital and analog documentation, and adaptive re-use design proposals. Students also engage in field study in Pompeii and Paestum as a component of a three credit hour archeology course.

Please note that all Alfred State students seeking to study in this program must fill out the Architecture Sant'Anna Course Approval Form (pdf) with Alfred State's transcript advisor to make sure that they are registering for the appropriate courses.

Architecture students wishing to study in Sorrento during the faculty-led spring semester program should notify their department and make sure that they are submitting their study abroad application to the Office of International Education as soon as possible. We recommend getting your application in at the end of the spring semester, the year prior. We will accept some applications at the start of the fall semester to accommodate transfer students, but the earlier you submit your application, the better. Faculty-led experiences do have limited spaces and late applications could have a negative impact on your ability to join the program.
