Alfred State has a long tradition of fostering and nurturing agriculture through local and regional partnerships. In that tradition, the Alfred State Green Team launched the Alfred Community Garden in 2010 to provide hands-on education in sustainable agriculture to students, faculty, staff, and community members. The garden, which is located on land owned by Alfred State and governed by an independent board of directors, offers multiple opportunities for service learning projects and civic engagement. The garden also enables local production of healthy and affordable foods, thereby contributing to community food security.
Join Us
The community garden is open to members of the campus community, members of the local community, and not-for-profits who wish to learn about and grow produce. Garden plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This garden area is a place where people can join together to improve their lives. Community gardeners may choose to supply surplus produce to food banks or shelters. Produce cannot be grown for commercial sale. The garden is managed as an organic garden. Follow us on Facebook.
Amenities for gardeners will include:
- A 4x8 garden plot (multiple plots available)
- Greenhouse access for extending the growing season
- Organic seeds as available
- Compost
- Tools and supplies
- Instruction and mentoring
- A growing, caring, nurturing environment for you and your garden!
Guidelines
Gardeners will be asked to sign an agreement upholding the rules of the garden.
