Alfred State College
Each year, Alfred State students’ lives and futures are changed for the better thanks to donors like you. Your support makes clubs, programs, scholarships, activities, technology, trips to competitions, and much more possible. We are so grateful for your generosity, and are proud to count you among our members of the Alfred State Family!
Altogether within the past academic year, the Alfred State Development Fund was able to raise more than $3.6 million in total support.
This past year, more than 1,000 students received scholarship funds, money that is essential for many of them to attend college.
Some specific ways in which your donation made an impact include:
• More than a dozen Alfred State students traveling to South Carolina to construct a home with Habitat for Humanity of Horry County.
• Building Trades students teaming up with HistoriCorps on historic preservation efforts in New York State (Harriman State Park) and Oregon (Silver Falls State Park).
• The Esports team earning gold in a tournament at the Empire State Winter Games.
• Eight Business Department programs earning first-time accreditation through the International Council for Business Education (IACBE).
Thank you again for your support and for showing our students your Pioneer Pride!

Alumni & Friends Magazine Fall 2020
Alfred State College (ASC) honored a couple of Pioneers and recognized its major contributors at an annual President’s Society Dinner at the Alfred Lake Lodge.
The President’s Society is a dedicated group of alumni, friends, parents, faculty, staff, and corporations/foundations who support the college through contributions of $1,000 or more annually to the Alfred State College Development Fund, Inc. Each fall, the college holds a recognition dinner in honor of President’s Society members.
One highlight of the fall 2020 dinner was presenting alumnus Burt Zweigenhaft with the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters that was conferred to him during this year’s virtual commencement ceremony. Zweigenhaft studied business at ASC and was a member of the 1971 championship NJCAA swimming team. Today, he is a key industry thought leader and an accomplished executive in the specialty-biotech pharmaceutical and oncology care ecosystems. Additionally, he has worked with Swim Across America for decades to help raise millions in the fight against cancer.
Another major moment of the evening involved a surprise award presentation. Former First Lady Mary Huntington and Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Danielle White presented current First Lady Debbie Sullivan with a bouquet of a dozen roses and a pottery bowl made by Alfred artist Kay Brooks to recognize the impact that Mrs. Sullivan has made on Alfred State and the community during her tenure as first lady of the college.
Mrs. Sullivan is a retired nurse who is selfless in caring for others. In addition to hosting and entertaining many different groups and individuals for dinners and receptions, she also actively participates in numerous community clubs and organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Baker’s Bridge, the Bethesda Foundation, and the Wellsville YMCA Board. She is also the president of the Allegany County Republican Women.
In addition to recognizing these Pioneers for their excellence, Alfred State President Dr. Skip Sullivan provided an update on the college, and Major Gifts Officer Jay Wilder spoke about the new Major Gifts Campaign that launched last month.

Thanks to your support, we were able to raise over $138,000 for students in need through our Support Our Students (SOS) Emergency Fund.
The fund was launched this past April to help students dealing with food insecurity, financial concerns, technology needs, and more as a result of the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The money raised benefited a number of areas, including:
• $25,000 for bridge scholarships
• $25,000 for books/materials/computers
• $25,000 for food insecurity
• $25,000 for basic life needs
• Varying amounts for utilities, transportation, and emergencies.
Alfred State Pioneers are known for helping one another and overcoming great obstacles, and this was no exception! Each gift made a difference in the life of a fellow Pioneer, and we thank everyone who donated!

2020 – New Tax Laws
Planned giving
Don’t pay more taxes than you should.
Recently, Congress made significant changes to our nation’s tax laws. After 2020, taxpayers must take distributions from the IRA at age 72, not age 70 ½. Gone is the ability for children to inherit an IRA and stretch payments for their lifetime. They must now take the payments in 10 years. With these and all the other changes, it could be easy to miss some deductions and pay more than you should.
You have ways to reduce your taxes, increase your income, and provide for your family and the causes important to you. Here are some quick ideas to take advantage of (or not be disappointed by) the recent tax law changes.
These are just some quick ideas to show you that even with the new laws, you can still maximize your deductions and provide for your family and the charities you cherish. Call or email us to find out all we can do to help you end the year in a tax-favorable way. Check out our resources at legacy.AlfredState.edu.
If Your Concern Is:
Increased Standard Deduction
Stretch Provision of Your IRA
Need More Income
Try This:
If you want to have a higher income tax deduction, bunch your charitable donations. Gift more in one year, then take a year off. Take the itemized, higher deduction, then the standard deduction the next year.
Establish a charitable remainder unitrust that your IRA fully funds when you
die. You can choose the length of time your children receive money from the
trust without the 10-year limit.
Establish a charitable gift annuity that pays you fixed, reliable payments for life.
