Welcome Pioneer strong
Alfred State College
Spring 2020 Alumni & Friends Magazine
As you know, Alfred State Pioneers are strong.
We’re known for rolling up our sleeves, getting to work, and doing what it
takes to get the job done. We’re also known for helping one another and
overcoming great obstacles.
That’s why countless Alfred State Pioneers stepped up in a big way this past spring to help people deal with the
worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Whether it was turning alcohol into hand sanitizer, working at local hospitals,
making masks from 3D printers, or even holding a virtual poetry reading, Alfred State Pioneers were making a
positive impact in so many different ways.
In this issue of the Alumni and Friends Magazine, you’ll find these stories and others like them that are sure to fill
you with Pioneer Pride. I certainly could not be prouder to be your president and thank every one of you for doing
your part to help.
Of course we also have several non-COVID-19-related stories in this issue, including our alumni and faculty
profiles. In these, you’ll read about Tod Maitland, who has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood
during his long career as a sound engineer; Brandon Davis, who now works for a top electrical contracting
company called Schuler-Haas; and CJ Tremper, an Alfred State alum who now brings valuable real-world
experience and knowledge with him to the classroom and the shop every day as an instructor.
You’ll also read about Colleen Argentieri, who retired as director of Alumni Relations in May after more than 30
years of working at our college. Many of you have met Colleen and gotten to know her well over the years through
attending various alumni events or even through participating in our alumni chapters. While she may now be
retired, Colleen will always be a Pioneer, and we will certainly miss her.
In closing, I would just like to reiterate how proud I am to be your president. I am proud of the work that you do
every day, the ways that you are making a difference in people’s lives, and the ways that you stepped up and
helped out during such a difficult and unprecedented time. Know that we’re thinking of you and we hope that you
and your loved ones are doing well.
I would also urge you to reach out to your Alfred State friends, even if you haven’t connected in a while, and
encourage them to stay Alfred Strong. We are all Pioneers and we are all in this together. Be safe and stay strong!
Respectfully,
Dr. Skip Sullivan, President
