Located only 7 miles from I-86, traveling by car or bus are easy ways to visit campus. Listed below are many different forms of transportation available.

Bus Service to Alfred

Coach USA makes multiple daily stops in Alfred and they offer discounted rates for students. For added convenience Alfred Travel Center offers non-stop express bus service on specific dates that are most in demand by our students for college breaks.

For the 2019-20 year, the nonstop express bus dates are:

  • October 4th Mini-break express bus: departs Alfred at 3pm to NYC (Port Authority).  Please note: for students who cannot make the express bus, there are 3 regular scheduled buses with normal amount of stops on October 5.  
  • October 8th Mini-break return express bus: departs NYC Port Authority at 3pm
  • November 26th Thanksgiving bus:  departs Alfred at 3pm to NYC Port Authority.  Note: students who cannot make the express bus can take advantage of 3 regularly scheduled buses with normal stops on November 27th.   
  • December 1st Thanksgiving return express bus:  departs NYC Port Authority at 3pm

Note: during finals week in December, there is no express bus and students can use the regularly scheduled buses (3 times daily).This is due to the varying dates of departure of students have based on their differing exam and departure schedules.

  • January 19th 2020 return express bus (eve of spring classes):  departing NYC Port Authority at 3pm
  • March 6th Spring break express bus: departs Alfred at 3pm to NYC Port Authority
  • March 14th Spring break return express bus: departs NYC Port Authority at 3pm

Note: during May finals week and conclusion of our semester, there is no express bus and students can use the regularly scheduled buses (3 times daily).This is due to the varying dates of departure of students because most students use ground transportation to move their full set of belongings home.

Additional bes service is available by Trailways with a stop in Hornell that requires an additional car or bus ride for the additional 20 minutes to campus. HornelL Area Transit HAT

Air Travel to Alfred

Rochester International Airport - Served by all major airlines and approximately 1.5 hours from campus. Over time, our students have learned that the Rochester Airport most commonly offers the best balance of geographic convenience, flight options, and price. In order to help connect our students with this airport to make air travel an option, we offer a special shuttle on dates consistent with the express bus services mentioned above.​

Special Rochester airport shuttle is $20 each way and fulfilled by ACES.

Tickets may be purchased at the Campus Store. The dates for the special Rochester Airport Shuttle:

  • Oct. 4 Mini-Break airport shuttle: pickup will occur on the campus loop road near SLC 318 (across from Braddon Hall) 3 p.m.
  • Oct. 8 Mini-break return airport shuttle: departs lower terminal by ground transportation at 6 p.m. sharp
  • Nov. 26 Thanksgiving airport shuttle: pickup will occur on the campus loop road near SLC 318 (across from Braddon Hall) at 3 p.m.
  • Dec. 1 Thanksgiving airport return shuttle: departs lower terminal by ground transportation at 6 p.m.
  • Dec. 12 recess shuttle #1 pickup will occur on the campus loop road near SLC 318 (across from Braddon Hall) at 8 a.m.
  • Dec. 14 recess shuttle #2 pickup will occur on the campus loop road near SLC 318 (across from Braddon Hall) at 8 a.m.
  • Jan. 19 2020 return airport shuttle (eve of spring classes): lower terminal by ground transportation at 6 p.m. sharp
  • March 6 Spring break airport shuttle: pickup will occur on the campus loop road near SLC 318 (across from Braddon Hall) at 3 p.m.
  • March 14 Spring break return airport shuttle: departs lower terminal by ground transportation at 6 p.m.

Alternative airport options: students can access flights to both the Buffalo or Corning/Elmira airports. However, please note that the college does NOT supply airport shuttles to these airports and students choosing to book itineraries to these airports shall make their own arrangements to reach campus (e.g. friends, family, hired driver service). Buffalo is served by all major airlines (approximately 2.25 hours from campus. Elmira is only served by Delta, United, and Allegiant with limited flights and connecting airports (approximately 1.5 hours from campus.)

Campus and Area Shuttle Buses

The free campus shuttle is available every school day for students to utilize around the loop road in Alfred. There are also free shuttle buses for students attending classes on the Wellsville campus. Another shuttle provides service from the Alfred campus to the college farm, motorcycle technology and veterinary technology. Hours of operation for the free campus shuttles:

The Wellsville Shuttle picks up and delivers students from the Alfred Campus to the Wellsville Campus each day. Curriculum specific transportation for Wellsville is available and arranged with the academic departments. For example, Culinary students may need a 1 p.m. shuttle bus from the Alfred campus on certain days or Culinary students may require bus service after late-night culinary labs.

Nurse transportation ensures that nursing students can get to their assigned work centers in local health care facilities, even if they do not own a vehicle.

Getting around our area (Hornell, Wellsville, immediate region)

In Allegany County (e.g. Wellsville Village): Access Allegany has several scheduled bus routes throughout Allegany County. Schedules are posted on the Access Allegany Web site. You may contact them by phone 585-593-1738.

In Steuben County (e.g. City of Hornell): Hornell Area Transit (HAT) runs a bus to the Alfred campus Monday through Friday. The HAT schedule is also available by calling 607-324-7910.

Livery Services (taxi, Uber, Lyft)

Services in our rural region are limited. Please consult your preferred ride-share service or search for livery options in advance before relying them to be available on demand (as might be normal in urban areas).

Weekly Shopping Trips

Students may enjoy free shopping shuttles to the Wegmans/ Wal-Mart Plaza in Hornell twice a week. Catch the shopping shuttle from any bus stop on campus by showing your Alfred State ID. No large purses or backpacks are allowed on the bus.

On Wednesday evenings the shopping shuttle departs Alfred at 4:30 p.m. and returns at 6:30. On Saturday mornings the shopping shuttle has an 11:00 a.m. departure and returns at 2:00 p.m.

International Travel

The office of International Education will provide transportation service on specific dates specified below from Rochester International Airport to Alfred State for international and out-of-state students. If students fly into other airports in New York State, they must use alternative transportation services for travel to Alfred State. These services may include Trailways Bus, taxi, or friend. Alfred State students can also pay to reserve a seat on the Luxury Limos shuttle.  We also recommend that students look at the options listed on the campus Student Life Livery Service Page that is referenced at the top of this page to see if there are other transportation options.

For International/Out of State Transportation Requests to/from ROC

Submit the online transportation request form (login required) at least ten business days before service is needed.

For arrival at Greater Rochester International Airport, in most instances, a college representative will meet students by the baggage claim area unless they have been notified prior to arrival to meet the driver outside. For departure, students should wait for the bus at Orvis or the Administration Building unless otherwise specified by the driver or international office after the reservation was made. Required Flight Information

When submitting your transportation request, it is the students responsibility to provide the following information:

  • Name of airline carrier
  • Date of flight
  • Time of flight to Greater Rochester International Airport
  • Flight number
  • Flight connection city prior to arriving in Rochester

Traveling Outside the Shuttle Bus Service Schedule

Traveling from New York City or downstate is often best accomplished by bus. The Alfred area is served by Shortline Bus Lines and Trailways who make direct stops at Alfred Travel Center, West University Street, Alfred, and offer discounts to our students.

Commercial livery services in our rural region are limited. However, the Coordinator of International Student Services, phone 607-587-4059, or University Police, phone 607-587-3999, maintain contact information and can provide numbers upon request.
