General Education Courses/Requirements

Effective for students who matriculate (new students enrolling in a degree granting program) beginning Fall 2023 and after:

The SUNY General Education Framework (SUNY-GE) requires all students enrolled in baccalaureate, Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) degree programs satisfactorily complete at least 30 credit hours of General Education coursework.  Communication (Written and Oral); Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice; Mathematics (and Quantitative Reasoning); and Natural Sciences (and Scientific Reasoning) are all required.  In addition, courses from three out of the following six knowledge and skill areas must be completed: Humanities, Social Sciences, The Arts, US History and Civic Engagement, World History and Global Awareness, and/or World Languages.  

SUNY GE requires all students enrolled in Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs satisfactorily complete a minimum of 20 credit hours of approved Gen Ed coursework.  Communication (Written and Oral); Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice; Mathematics (and Quantitative Reasoning); and Natural Sciences (and Scientific Reasoning) are required.

SUNY GE requires all students enrolled in Associate in Occupation Studies (AOS) degree programs to meet the required knowledge and skill areas of Communication (Written and Oral); Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice; Mathematics (and Quantitative Reasoning); and Natural Sciences (and Scientific Reasoning).  These knowledge and skill areas may be freestanding or embedded in existing coursework.  

Students enrolled in any undergraduate degree program must demonstrate the two required core competencies of Critical Thinking and Reasoning and Information Literacy in addition to the knowledge and skill area requirements listed above.

Effective for students who matriculate (new students enrolling in degree granting program) prior to Fall 2023:

The SUNY General Education Requirement (SUNY-GER) necessitates all students enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program satisfactorily complete at least 30 credit hours General Education coursework.  Basic Communication (Written and Oral) and Mathematics are required along with additional courses from at least five of the following eight general education knowledge areas: Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Western Civilization, American History, Other World Civilizations, The Arts, and/or Foreign Language.  Alfred State has similar requirements for the many of its associate degree programs to better serve our students as they transition to four-year programs.  The specific requirements are listed below:

Additional Information

General education courses taken within the SUNY system will be accepted to satisfy the general education requirement. Please refer to Academic Regulation 305 for transfer credit grade requirements and Academic Regulation 200 for graduation requirements.
