Tammy Renée Brackett creates artwork that poses epistemological questions regarding identity, categorization, and location. Her most recent work explores the mortality of both humans and deer, what they leave behind after death, and how these remnants can confront traditional understandings of identity. She employs the traditional craft techniques used by her mother and grandmothers (quilting, tatting, and rug hooking) while absorbing the deer hunting culture that surrounds her in rural Western New York State.
Her traditional crafting techniques are often combined with digital drawing, animation, video, and laser cutting/etching. The deer hides used in Brackett’s work are salvaged from deer hit by cars and hunters who would have otherwise discarded them. She tans them herself using environmentally responsible and sustainable methods.
